“This is the Discover card Fraud department. Call 1-800-555-1212 - IMMEDIATELY

Sounds ominous, right? So I call them up, and I hear a serious voice telling me to please hold on, then I hear the official sounding “you are being recorded” beep beep beep.

Then the voice comes on the phone and says, “Thanks for calling Discover Card. Please give me your Discover Card number.”

What would you do? I am worried about fraud on my card, right? But do I know who I am actually talking to?

This practice has always seemed strange and unsafe to me. What I do is start from the main number from the card itself, and get transferred to the right place from there. It’s clumsy,

I would give them a fake number. Or I would say, “Sure, but for security purposes could you tell me your corporate mailing address?”

Scammers with 800 numbers — sounds like something that could easily be dealt with. But sheesh.

What I generally do in those cases is call the number on the back of my credit card, instead of the number in the message. Ask to be connected to their fraud department, and if there really is a problem with the card, the Real discover people will know about it, and you have confidence you are talking to the right people.

I would say, dont call that number, go to discover site and call the number on their website..

You have to be careful about illegal phishing, but take note, Discover participates in illegal phishing as well. So even if you call for an issue, be careful about what information you are providing.

I have a few Discovercard horror stories where they do practice in some predatory and questionable practices.
