Where can I find non-shrill political coverage?
I read the New York Times, and magazines like The Atlantic and The New Yorker, and web sites like Salon. Each of these, IMO are relatively thoughtful and interesting and a good way to keep up with what’s going on. And I tend to agree with them often. I guess my liberal bias matches their liberal bias.
I feel like I am not hearing ‘the other side’.
What are the counterparts to for example The Atlantic or Salon for the right? Whatever commentary I come across that leans more conservative tends to be shrill, partisan and impossible to take seriously. I’ve been looking at the Wall Street Journal’s political coverage which qualifies.
But can someone point me to the conservative equivalent of The Atlantic or New Yorker or Salon?

Well, see that’s a hard question to answer. I hate to say that media as a whole is liberally biased but I honestly believe that. That just happens as a result from the journalism schools and the general hierarchy in place within media as a whole. Any polls taken among journalists confirms the bias. So naturally, when you come across something that’s conservative, it’s like all the few stragglers clumped together and to your ears sounds rather shrill.
But, that aside… The Washington Times (i.e. not the Post)… National Review and the Weekly Standard (but that’ll sound very shrill to you I suspect).
You may find that there are some columnists you can respect on the right. So if you’re looking for thoughtful perspective, you might read columns by Thomas Sowell, Linda Chavez, Cal Thomas, and Michael Reagan. You can find many of their columns on townhall.com… you’ll just have to wade through and focus on just the columnists you can stand to read.

I think what you’re really saying is that politics is a media game.

Not a “site”, more of a “portal”, but I find it has a good balance of articles from both sides, plus a very useful aggregation of a number of polls:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/
Some say it is a “right-wing” site, but with articles like “Palin Knows Nothing About Foreign Policy” and “McCain’s Blizzard of Lies” (NYT and Slate), that’s a tough one to swallow.

Politics is very much a media game in that it’s about influencing opinion to garner advantage. On the right, there are sites like townhall.com and such. On the left is http://www.democracynow.org I think while they are left-leaning, they tend to be more objective than not as they are not commercially sponsored.
